Honoring Heroes & Serving Those Who Protect – A Spotlight on COTSO
Welcome to Guard Post, our blog series that shines a light on the people, organizations, and tools shaping the security industry.
This week, we’re proud to feature the Charitable Organization for Texas Security Officers (COTSO)—a nonprofit going above and beyond to care for those who protect us every day.
Who Is COTSO?
COTSO is a Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting private security officers and their families through life’s most challenging moments. Whether an officer is injured on duty, experiences a disaster, or tragically loses their life in the line of duty, COTSO steps in with direct assistance and a deep commitment to dignity and respect.
Founded to fill a critical gap in support for security professionals, COTSO’s mission is simple but powerful: serve the unsung heroes of private security by offering financial aid, resources, and honor to those who serve—and those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.
What They Do
COTSO offers a range of impactful programs designed specifically for the private security community in Texas:
• Line-of-Duty Memorial Services: When tragedy strikes, COTSO provides Honor Guard services and ceremonial support to ensure that fallen security officers are remembered with the respect they deserve.
• Hardship & Disaster Assistance: Security professionals facing personal crises—such as on-the-job injuries, house fires, or illness—can turn to COTSO for financial support and emergency resources.
• Free Vest Program: In 2023, COTSO launched a Free Vest Program, distributing high-quality safety vests to guards in need. The program aims to reduce preventable injuries and save lives by increasing access to essential gear and training.
• Advocacy & Awareness: Through public education, community events, and strategic partnerships, COTSO brings attention to the challenges faced by private security personnel—and works to elevate their role in public safety conversations.
Why It Matters
The work of security guards is vital but often underappreciated. Many guards work long hours in high-risk environments without benefits or backup. COTSO offers not just material support, but also recognition, solidarity, and honor.
As one COTSO volunteer put it:
“*We’re here so no guard ever feels forgotten or unworthy of support. Every badge matters.*”

Final Word
